‘THE MIRACLE WORKER’ – May 11-25. Maui Onstage presents The Miracle Worker. It’s a compilation of excerpts from world renowned author and lecturer Helen Keller’s autobiography of the same name. YOUNG CREATIVES: INSIDE MY WORLD – May 4-24. This exhibition is a showcase for the work of Maui high school students who participated in the MACC’s “Art-Rageous” 2013 summer program. Exhibition artists include Isai Barboza, Ali M. L. Costa, Sabrina Futch, Julianna Hedge, Tiffany Keau, Eui Yol Lee. Kira Nakamura, Alysha Nishibayashi-Rincoin, Jalyza Pascual and Raechelle Tagalicud. JON NORDBY – Fri, May 23. Nordby is a full-time Maui resident–retired, but following a new creative path by making unique stone and exotic wood table lamps. He designed a number of interior elements, including designing and making lamps for the bedrooms and common areas of his Wailea home. Visit him at the gallery while he adds the finishing touches to his newest lamps formed from wood, stone, blown glass and small carvings. Free. 11am-3pm. RICHARD DIGIACOMO – Sat, May 24. As a master of his craft, Richard has been nationally rated in the top five percent in his field for his coloration techniques. Richard was ascended to a new level of artistic ability with his newly-created metal fused art. Created by the etching of aluminum panels and color, and fused with various techniques, his technique calls for many coats of clear seals, applied to create depth and movement. PANIOLO COUNTRY: A THEMED EXHIBITION – Sat, May 24. XAVIER RUDD – Thu, May 29. One of Australia’s most iconic voices is coming to the MACC. Rudd is a singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, surfer and environmental/cultural activist. He surrounds himself with an array of instruments: three didgeridoos in front of him, a guitar on his lap, a stompbox by his habitually bare feet and an assortment of drums, banjos, harmonicas, bells and bass guitar near at hand (or near at foot, as the case may be). Rudd’s songs touch on spirituality, humanity, environmentalism and the rights and mistreatment of the Aboriginal people of his homeland (he includes Australian and Canadian Aboriginal vocals in his songs). SOLO SESSIONS: BARRY FLANAGAN-HEARTSTRINGS & STORIES – Sat, May 31. One of the world’s great guitarists and Hawaii’s finest songwriters, Barry Flanagan has composed some of Hawaii’s most cherished songs, including the Na Hoku award-winning “Lei Pikake” and Ku‘u Lei, Ku‘uipo.” Stephen Stills called him “One of the great instrumentalists’ of our time, a masterful guitarist.” This Solo Session presents an opportunity to hear Flanagan’s music up close and personal, as he relates some tales of his life’s journey. HERITAGE FILM FESTIVAL SERIES: OLA I KA WAI – Sun, Jun 1. THe Heritage Film Festival is a signature series presented by The MACC that brings film and discussion to the public attention about themes and issues specific to Hawaii life. Water is a public resource that must be conserved for present and future generations, and water rights is a topic with environmental impact and potential repercussions for all who live and work on these islands. This film and the talk story session after will focus on decisions and actions by the State Water Commission, including the diversion of water from streams for private use. Tickets are $10. 2014 MAUI FILM FESTIVAL – Jun 4-8. This annual film extravaganza on Maui is filled with outstanding cinema in all forms. REBELUTION – Thu, Jun 5. Originally formed in 2004, Rebelution’s Eric Rachmany (vocals / guitar), Rory Carey (keyboards), Wesley Finley (drums) and Marley D. Williams (bass) met in college while living in Isla Vista–a neighborhood situated next to UC Santa Barbara. Rebelution always provides inspiring and engaging music that leaves listeners with a sense that they have the power to make this world a better place. ZENSHIN DAIKO: 15TH ANNUAL TAIKO FESTIVAL – Sat, Jun 7. Zenshin Daiko presents more than 50 talented performers in this year’s exciting Annual Taiko Festival. Zenshin Daiko begins the evening with the premiere of two new music works, as well as treasured favorites. Then Hanayui, a sister trio of kodo music, will transport you to a simpler time of innocent joy and wonderment and following in a rich tradition of popular entertainers who traveled Japan’s countryside. Hanayui has captivated audiences around the world with their fresh interpretation of folk dances, vibrant percussive sounds and hauntingly beautiful songs. Hanayui will be accompanied by Yoshikazu Fujimoto, Kodo’s esteemed odaiko player for more than 30 years. Come experience the pure sound and color of rural Japan at its finest. ‘THE MIKADO’ – Wed, Jun 18. Performed with members of the Hawaii Symphony Orchestra, Gilbert and Sullivan’s romp through the mythical and nonsensical fantasy world of The Mikado, as performed by the Hawaii Opera Theatre with both international and local stars. Set in Japan as a satire on English society, the storyline of The Mikado weaves the two cultures together with humorous lyrics and elaborate plot twists.
